A silk saree, tracing Indian history right from the Harappa-Mohenjadaro period to the freedom struggle movement in the form of painting and zari motifs, has won an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest saree ever made.

Pothys, a popular garment house in Tamil Nadu, has made the 1,276-foot-long saree in four months with the help of 10 weavers and 10 painters.

“The saree contains 141 oil paintings depicting various important events in Indian history, cultural and social life of people in ancient period, dance and music besides portraits of Bharat Mata, Gandhiji, Tiruvalluvar and Swami Vivekananda, the Rama era, Krishna era, the periods of Buddha, Mahaveera, Maurya, Chera, Chola and Pandiya, Rajputs and Moghuls were also captured on the saree,” Pothys Managing Partner S Ramesh said on Friday.

The saree, produced at a cost of Rs 22 lakh, also had intricately-woven gold zari, depicting exquisite monuments of India, including Parliament buildin and Taj Mahal. Made in a single piece measuring 1,276 feet in length and four feet in width and weighing 40 kg, the saree was a “tribute to Mother India,” he added.

Officials of the Guinness Book of World Records has accepted it as an offical Guinness World Record, Ramesh said.
